USM24CA Board Advances Optional 6:1 Mainsheet Rule Proposal IM24CA to AGM

The U.S. Melges 24 Class Association (USM24CA) Executive Committee and Board of District Governors recently reviewed submissions concerning proposed class rule and regulation updates. Following its review, the full Board agreed to advance one proposal to the International Melges 24 Class Association (IM24CA) for consideration at the November 2026 Annual General Meeting.

The proposal would allow the optional use of a 6:1 mainsheet purchase system. This alternative configuration would not require owners to modify their existing equipment. Rather, the purpose of the submission is to formally establish the 6:1 mainsheet purchase as a permitted option within the Melges 24 Class Rules, removing any uncertainty surrounding its use.

The rationale behind the proposal is that a 6:1 mainsheet system may reduce the physical load required to trim the mainsail effectively, particularly in stronger winds. This may make mainsail trimming more manageable for a wider range of sailors, including women, youth sailors and smaller crew members. The submission also notes that trimming loads have increased with the introduction of high-modulus, ultra-low-stretch mainsail materials.

For owners who choose to use the alternative configuration, the proposed modification would be relatively limited and is expected to require only one additional block and, depending upon the existing setup, a longer mainsheet.

In the meantime, USM24CA leadership welcomes any comments, questions or additional feedback from owners before the proposal is formally submitted by September 30, 2026, to the IM24CA for consideration at the AGM.
