MELGES 24 SALE (2002) - USA 544
Melges 24 USA 544 “Dansoux” for sale. $30,000 (with spare mast, $35K). All reasonable offers entertained. Quick Summary: Great boat, always been fast. Won the Corinthian World in early 2000s (before I owned it). Won a ton of events locally in the GYA. Have enjoyed the boat immensely but kids are all in Optis and Lasers, so I haven’t raced it in two years. Been sailing IC37s instead (charter program with no maintenance)•  Time to sell. Sails: 3DI North Main and Jib. Moderate use; not brand new but still in good shape • North P1 Spinnaker, same vintage as 3DI main and jib; moderate use, still in good shape • New P2 North Runner (put up once for about 2 minutes, never put up again) • Two older mains and one jib. Equipment: New main halyard with soft shackle; new tapered spinnaker halyard; extra jib wire. Several extra spinnaker and jib sheets. Recent Improvements: All new deck-mounted auto-ratchets for spinnaker and jib sheets (brand new after 2023 Nationals, only used once since) • Rail cushion/guard for soft grip while hiking. • Keel and rudder laser sighted into alignment. • Rudder re-gelcoated; like new. • New Measurement Certificate permitting removal of one corrector weight (has not been done yet). Prior improvements: New Black Mast (Southern Spar) in 2010 after original Omohundro white mast broke after lower shroud had become dislodged upwind without noticing. • Standard shorter stanchions, with reinforcements under the deck. • Regular maintenance. Spare Mast: Rebuilt Omohundro, by Donny Brennan (boatwright to US Olympic Team for four cycles). Spare mast has all parts; has been repainted matte black. Sailed 2023 Nationals on Eel Snot. Boatwork history: • Replaced decking between mast step and compression post with G10 glass. This was needed after breaking the original mast in 2010, which had compressed some of that decking. • Augmented fiberglass inside the hull, on starboard side where main rib meets the hull under the chain plate. Repairs/Updates Needed: Dock box is fully functional but locking mechanism • There is a ding in the gelcoat on the underside of the keel bulb. Not significant, and only into the gelcoat (not through it), but probably should be fixed for high end racing. • Top Delrin on keel is cracked but still fully functional. I would have changed this, but the keel still sits just right, and others have had a hard time getting a new Delrin to fit in right, preserving alignment. • Trailer frame is slightly bent behind the axle. Doesn’t affect towing but should probably be fixed. Trailer brakes not functional any more. Again, hasn’t affected towing, but might be needed through hills/mountains. Built by Melges Performance Sailboats US, she was completely renovated by Dal Ferro in 2020, including new carbon rudder blade original from Melges US, titanium rudder fitting with laser check alignment, new carbo reinforcements between deck and hull, new Raptoc floor 5mm gray foan. She is perfectly weighted and refreshed with new mast Southern Spars in 2020. She is very fast both in in light breezes and in strong winds.
