Epic Day in Trieste: Nika Takes Early Lead at Melges 24 Worlds
24 September 2025 – Trieste, Italy – Racing finally got underway at the 2025 Melges 24 World Championship, and the Gulf of Trieste delivered in dramatic fashion. Two high-intensity races were sailed in strong Bora winds, with gusts nearing 30 knots in the opener. The heavy conditions caused multiple breakdowns, a dismasting, a collision, and even a man overboard, though all crews returned safely.
Geoff Fargo’s Sentinel (USA) claimed the first race win, while Ante Cesic’s Razjaren (CRO) came back strong to win Race 2. Consistency proved key, and after two races Vladimir Prosikhin’s Nika (MON) holds the overall lead with four points, followed by Cuyler Morris’s Dark Horse (USA) and Peter Karrié’s Nefeli (GER). In the Corinthian division, Ante Botica’s Mataran 24 (CRO) remains on top. Racing continues tomorrow with up to three races scheduled.
Racing will be followed live: streaming coverage is planned on the social media channels of Yacht Club Adriaco and the International Melges 24 Class Association, with commentary by journalist Andrea Falcon and technical input from Mauro Melandri. Meta Sail live tracking will also be available.
