Grondin's Dark Energy Dominates in Riva del Garda
American talent made a bold statement at the third act of the 2025 Melges 24 European Sailing Series in Riva del Garda, as Laura Grondin at the helm of Dark Energy surged to an emphatic overall victory. Facing a deeply talented international fleet, Grondin and her team, composed of tactician Taylor Canfield, alongside Ian Liberty, Mac Agnese and Nick Ford delivered a powerful performance — one that saw them take control of the regatta on Day Two and never look back.
After a breezy start on Day One with Lake Garda’s famed Ora wind delivering classic conditions, it was Day Two’s more technical and tactical races that provided the breakthrough for Dark Energy. Grondin and crew found another gear, stepping on the gas when the rest of the fleet hesitated in the fading breeze. Their ability to stay fast and clean in variable conditions gave them the edge, and by the final day, their overall lead was unshakable.
“It feels incredible to win here in Garda — such a historic and iconic sailing venue,” said Grondin. “Our team really gelled, and we were able to make great decisions when it mattered most. We’re thrilled to represent the U.S. and show what American teams can do on this stage.”
She wasn’t alone in flying the American flag proudly in Italy. Cuyler Morris (USA) on Dark Horse continued to build momentum on the European circuit. Morris and team posted a steady string of finishes, showing solid speed and gaining critical experience in the international fleet. Close behind, John Poulson (USA) on Long Shot delivered a strong showing, rounding out the trio of American entries at the event.
With top-tier American programs making the commitment to sail internationally, the Riva del Garda event once again demonstrated that U.S. Melges 24 teams are serious contenders on the global stage. Events like these serve as an ideal proving ground ahead of this year’s pinnacle competitions, including the North American and World Championships.
Next up, the European Series moves to Struer, Denmark for Act Four. But for now, the spotlight belongs to Laura Grondin and the Dark Energy crew — a shining example of American performance and perseverance at its finest.
