The 2025 Quantum Sails Melges 24 Great Lakes Cup Series kicked off in commanding fashion with the Spring Championship, hosted by Muskegon Yacht Club on May 17–18. With 24 teams on the line — including an impressive 15 Corinthian entries, the weekend delivered tight racing, strategic brilliance, and early-season momentum for the North American fleet.
Ahead of the first start, the regatta featured something new: a top-tier team knowledge-sharing session, led by Peter McClennen’s Gamecock Sailing. The session provided a rare opportunity for teams to collaborate and exchange insights before hitting the racecourse — the first of its kind for the Melges 24 Great Lakes Series and a meaningful step toward deeper fleet development.
Once racing began, Lake Michigan delivered classic conditions, challenging the fleet with moderate breeze and shifts that tested decision-making and boat handling. After six races, the event came down to the wire.
At the top, it was a dramatic tie on points. Steve Boho at the helm of The 300 and Peter McClennen’s Gamecock team each finished with 13 points, but Boho secured the regatta win on a tiebreaker. Both teams demonstrated superb consistency and command throughout the weekend, with a steady string of first place finishes.
The Corinthian teams made a powerful statement as well, locking in third through fifth overall. Canada’s Dan Berezin and his Surprise team, the defending Spring Champs, led the amateur division and took third overall. They were followed closely by Eric Vigrass and his team on Tomfoolery, and Scot Zimmerman on Bad Idea — two teams with strong reputations and growing momentum this season.
With Muskegon in the books, attention now turns to Detroit, where the fleet will reconvene for the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series, hosted by Bayview Yacht Club in two weeks’ time. The event serves as the second stop on both the Quantum Great Lakes Cup and the Melges 24 North American Sailing Series — promising another stacked lineup and fierce competition.
