Eight Bells Toll for Frank Davenport

It is with deep sadness that the Melges 24 Class honors the life and legacy of Frank Davenport, owner of Express Lane, a beloved member of our Melges 24 Class and sailing community, passed away peacefully April 27th at the age of 89.

Frank was the embodiment of kindness, warmth, and sportsmanship. As the skipper of Express Lane, Frank brought heart and soul to every regatta—never missing an opportunity to sail with his family, especially his son and grandson. Together, they formed a remarkable three-generation crew that inspired everyone around them. His final race at the U.S. National Championship in 2023, sailed at the age of 87, was a true testament to his enduring spirit and love for the sport.

To many of us, Frank was a constant—his presence both familiar and uplifting. From local events to international venues like Portoroz and Riva, he made everyone feel seen, supported, and welcomed. His gentle nature and genuine interest in others created bonds that extended far beyond the racecourse.

The Melges 24 Class offers its heartfelt condolences to Frank’s family, especially Jordan Gray and to the entire Express Lane team. We are grateful for the time we had with Frank and the legacy he leaves behind—a legacy of joy, family, and a lifelong passion for sailing.

Fair winds, Frank. You will be missed, but never forgotten. — The Melges 24 Class Association
