Reid Wins NYYC One Design Regatta

(Newport, R.I. USA - July 2, 2019) - The New York Yacht Club One Design Regatta took place last weekend, and marked the completion of Event No. 4 on the 2019 U.S. Melges 24 National Ranking Series. Moderate breezes on Saturday, and more breezy conditions on Sunday greeted the fleet. 

Atop the scoreboard after six races, Canada’s Richard Reid at the helm of Zingara dominated the competition with a string of first place finishes. Following closely in second was Laura Grondin’s Dark Energy.

“The sailing was very competitive, but honestly Richard had a another gear in terms of boat speed,” said Grondin. “Newport is always a marvelous place to sail in the summertime, with temperatures ranging between the high sixties and low eighties.”

“NYYC is the perfect place to enjoy cocktails and the view of the Newport harbor. This year, we had a special treat — Newport fireworks on Friday night off of Fort Adams.”

Wes Whitmyer’s Slingshot finished the event in third with George Haynie racing Firewater and Peter Quinn’s Patriot IV rounding out the top five.
