24s of Summer Shaping For Fun Battle Between Strong Corinthian Teams and Stacked Pro Teams
Ten teams will hit the start line for the seventh event of the Melges 24 Southeast Series. Leading the charge in the open division at the 24s of Summer Regatta next weekend at Davis Island Yacht Club is KC Shannon, with tactician Marty Kullman. Shannon is flying in from Georgia to make a comeback after years away from the class. He couldn’t pass up the opportunity to charter a good boat and load it with premium talent.
He will face some serious competition from a few teams, starting with Eddie Gary’s Firewater. After taking the J/70 Corinthian title in 2024 and clinching second place this year, Gary is ready to turn up the heat in the Melges 24 fleet. With a powerhouse crew and a great boat, he is poised for success.
Also coming in from out of town are several strong teams that have proven fast in the past. Gary Schwarting’s Obsession from Naples and Mojo, skippered by Davis MacLeod from Lake Lanier, will each have shots at the podium. Our home-grown DIYC team, Smile and Wave, will defend the home turf with a new crew.
The long-term forecast is looking great for breeze and even better for temperature. If you need an excellent warm-up for the Melges 24 Nationals coming up in Pensacola, stop by DIYC October 17–19 for some outstanding Southern hospitality—and to score some bragging points for your Southeast Race Series ranking!
