2022 U.S. Melges 24 Class Participation Survey Summary

During 2022, the USMCA conducted an online survey to accumulated data on racing, and related participation, from anyone interested in replying regardless of current paid class membership. The sharing of this data back to Melges 24 enthusiasts was a stated goal of the survey, along with helping direct the efforts of the USMCA leadership in the coming years.

To help assess the strength of participation in the survey, the US Class currently has 77 fully paid members. Seventy-two individuals completed the survey: 60% Owner, 29% Crew, and 11% Other. Approximately 15% of respondents are not currently racing (possible due to the supply of boats).

Most race 15-30 days a year, with approximately 75% under 45 days. 58% race year-round, and 34% race summer only. All indicated they would like to do travel events, or currently do.

The most common reasons to travel in order of importance to survey participants:

  • Location/venue

  • Fleet size

  • Affordability

  • Level of competition

  • Number of racing days

  • Corinthian competition

  • Clinics, and

  • Shoreside activities.

  • Every other reason made up less than 1% of responses.  When asked where teams go, suggesting where they find the above, in order of responses: Worlds, Charleston, Pensacola, CGOD, Ugotta, Bacardi, Nationals, Muskegon, GTYC, Quantum Cup, St. Pete.

As per the survey, the primary reasons teams have not participated in more racing; cost, COVID, and ease of logistics, in that order.  When asked how the Class could help participation the most common responses were; facilitate new and used boat sales, reduced participation costs, provide coaching, find a better balance between pros and Corinthians, and publish racing calendars early.  Only one person requested more racing.  Three quarters of respondents want a crew board on the website.

Additional common themes were more Corinthian opportunities, local regional races that cost less, and shorter events to accommodate time off challenges.
