Lauderdale Yacht Club to Host Melges 24 Worlds, Website LIVE

(FORT LAUDERDALE, FL) – The Lauderdale Yacht Club will host the 2022 Melges 24 World Championships, Commodore Stephanie Toothaker announced today.

“The website for the 2022 Melges 24 Worlds to be held May 8-15, 2022 in Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA, hosted by the Lauderdale Yacht Club is ready! We are very excited to have a World Championship for the first time since 2019,” says IM24CA Chair Laura Grondin. “SailTi is our digital platform which will offer us world class communications and tracking of our event and an app that you can download to your phone! Long considered one of the most competitive, tactical racing sailboats in the world, the Melges 24 requires four or five athletes to sail and can reach speeds of up to 20+ knots.  An estimated sixty boats based at LYC and The Sails Marina (Pier 66) will go head to head in the beautiful waters off the famed Fort Lauderdale Beach from May 10-15.

“We are thrilled to host this exciting class and these great athletes,” Commodore Toothaker announced.  “Warm water, consistent wind, and ocean swells make Fort Lauderdale the perfect racing venue, and the partnership between LYC and Pier 66 guarantees a fantastic shoreside experience for the competitors and their families.”

Event chair and PRO Tom Lihan echoed the Commodore’s enthusiasm.  “We’ll deliver the competitor-friendly racing LYC has become known for on the water, and plan to impress the teams and their families on shore as well.”

Known widely for its successful junior sailing program, LYC has hosted important competitions in the past, including the annual Lauderdale Olympic Classes Regatta, Pan-American Games Qualifiers, and its long participation in the Southern Ocean Racing Conference.  A new clubhouse, completed last year, will serve as the social focal point of the event.
