2020 U.S. Melges 24 National Ranking Series Kicks Off in Miami
The first event of the 2020 U.S. Melges 24 National Ranking Series is complete — the Bacardi Cup Invitational wrapped up this past weekend in Miami. The Bacardi Cup marked the last event on the 2019/2020 Winter Series for the fleet, but it also marked the beginning of the 2020 National Ranking Series.
This year, the Series consists of nine of the very best Melges 24 events taking place across North American and in Canada. Events such as both U.S. and Canadian Nationals, as well as the World Championship happening in Charleston, South Carolina are all included.
With one event complete, Bora Gulari has capture the immediate Series lead. He is followed by Rye, NY based Raza Mixta Melges 24 helmed by Peter Duncan. A former National Corinthian Champion, KC Shannon’s Shaka is seated third. Rounding out the top five is Kevin Welch’s MiKEY with Jeff Madrigali at the helm in fourth, and Canada’s Richard Reid is fifth.
Assuming the early lead in the Corinthian division is Norway’s Jan Frederik Dyvi racing the Team Sebago Melges 24. Trailing in second place is 2019 Corinthian U.S. National Champion and newly crowned 2020 Corinthian Winter Series Champion Steve Suddath at the helm of 3 1/2 Men. Germany’s Thomas Beck racing Phonobloc is third.
The next event on the Ranking Series is Sperry Charleston Race Week happening April 23-26 in South Carolina. Forty-nine teams are signed up, making the Melges 24 the largest fleet in attendance.
