Freides/Lamphere Win Bacardi Winter Series Championship Titles
With the conclusion of the Bacardi Cup Invitational Regatta, the 2022-23 Melges 24 Winter Series is officially complete. In the end, three events played out delivering a total of 22 races with Drew Freides’ Pacific Yankee taking the overall Championship title. Freides won the first and second events of the Series, and came very close to winning the third. 2022 Melges 24 World Champion Peter Duncan racing Raza Mixta challenged Freides’ at every turn, coming up with the big Bacardi Cup win, finishing second overall on the Winter Series Ranking. Laura Grondin’s Dark Energy came third, rounding out the podium.
Andrea Pozzi’s Bombarda and Peter Karrie’s Nefeli offered great competitive representation from Italy. They finished in fourth and fifth respectively.
The Corinthian division was as hotly contested as ever. Chuck Lamphere’s Entente came out on top to be crowned 2022-23 Melges 24 Corinthian Winter Series Champion. He too won the first two events in the all-amateur division, this ensured his overall Corinthian Series win.
A total of nine Corinthian teams fought fiercely with the majority of the fleet showing up for the amazing Bacardi Cup finale. 2021-22 Bacardi Cup Corinthian Champ Jan Frederik Dyvi’s Team RRH from Norway came second followed by Megan Ratliff’s Decorum.
Reigning Corinthian U.S. National Champion Steve Suddath racing 3 1/2 Men finished the Series as fourth Corinthian. Longtime Melges 24 owner and strong competitor, Corinthian Frank Davenport at the helm of Express Lane finished the Series in fifth.
